No Longer Newlyweds

A year ago today I made the smartest decision of my life and married Mike.

It has been a year since our wedding…how crazy is that? The other night we were talking about how quickly the time has passed. We agreed that the three months leading up to our wedding were excruciatingly slow and the past twelve have flown by. This moment still feels like it happened just yesterday:

I still smile when someone calls me Mike’s wife. I love buying cards that say ‘To My Husband’ (Mike gets at least two cards for each occasion---I have a hard time picking my favorite!)

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest, which I can sort of understand . You’re settling into your new roles and the expectations that go along with them. Am I responsible for cleaning and Mike for cutting the lawn? Should I be cooking dinner more often? Who buys the G and T’s?

My mom once told me that marriage is comforting because you don’t worry that every little fight is going to be the one that breaks you up. It sounds silly but it makes a lot of sense! You’re committed to one another and instead of just giving up, you talk it out. We definitely communicate a lot better now.

Of course, we still knit-pick--or 'scorch' one another, as is the term in this family. Mike’s dad once asked us what the good and bad parts of being married were. The stupid, little fights are definitely the worst. I think it’s because you’re both so overly sensitive that you end up picking fights. At least I know that’s how I am ;)

But there are so many good parts! Mike takes such good care of me, without even asking. We have finally had time to decide on how to decorate and have made some big strides towards improving our home. And we laugh.

Not a day goes by that we don’t laugh together. I am really, really weird but Mike is too--he laughs at my jokes even when we both know they're terrible. It’s also pretty special when you can communicate with your spouse through a series of hand movements or inside jokes and that's definitely us. Sure, no one else understands what we’re talking about but does that really matter?

So cheers to us. We're gonna celebrate it up big tonight and toast to how awesome we are. Here's to many more anniversaries to come!

  1. This makes me smile and I even got chills from my shoulders to my ankles. I'm not sure if that was from a gust of wind that came in from outside, but I'll go ahead and say it's from this post. I've enjoyed watching you guys grow together and I look forward to seeing all the gray hairs you'll get on this journey as one. Happy Anniversary! xo
