Who May I Ask Is Calling?

I have a stalker. Sort of.

For the past few days some number I don’t recognize has been calling me at odd hours of the night. When I don’t pick up or hit ‘ignore’ they don’t leave me a message. My voicemail has my name on it, so if it was a wrong number they should have learned their lesson by now. Logical, right?

I was already annoyed by this, but the final straw was when the person called while we were in Boston, we had just fallen asleep and had to be up in 4 hours for our flight. I vaguely remember ripping my phone out of the wall and tossing it somewhere across the room.

Last night, the number called again at 12:30 AM. Late night phone calls scare me for some reason, so I didn’t answer it. No message left. I was totally over this, so I put my detective skills to work and reverse addressed the number in hopes of finding out who my mysterious caller was. This only works if the call is coming from a landline...which it was! Bingo bango! We caught you!

I told Mike about my discovery and he asked me if I was going to call the person and see what their deal was. I, of course, am all talk and admitted I would probably just keep letting the calls continue. The thrill of the hunt was enough for me. Mike, however, enjoys uninterrupted sleep and informed me that he would be calling the culprit.

That boy kept calling and calling until someone at that house picked up. He told his entire firehouse to call until someone picked up. I can only imagine how many phone calls our anonymous friend tolerated before he gave in and answered, only to be confronted by my hubs on the other line asking “WHO AM I SPEAKING WITH?”

The end result is really not that exciting. It turns out the caller was some older gentleman who works until 12:00 at night and calls his uncle when he gets out. Apparently my number is similar to his uncle’s and he gets the digits confused. He apologized and Mike was sympathetic, but warned the man that he needed to be more aware when he was dialing the phone that late at night.

Mike called me while I was at work to tell me all this and I. Could. Not. Stop. Laughing. I couldn’t believe he called the guy over and over and over. I couldn’t believe it was an old man. I’m still laughing as I type this.

In short--don't mess with me or I will send Mike after you.

  1. This is hilarious. And, I have a similar situation, which you guys could totally have a hoot with. My cell phone is one digit off from the Regional Jail number. I get calls all the time for them. Next time I do, I'm going to act like it is the jail and make up some story about the inmate they are looking for is in the infirmary being treated for stab wounds from a shiv... or something worse.
