Scenes from an Italian restaurant

We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at La Grotta!

The food was delicious and the company was charming :)

On to year #3!

twenty four months

Next week we celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary.

Nothing significant has changed over the past year. Our weekends are still filled with weddings, trips to visit family and adventures with friends.

Mike still makes me laugh more than anyone I ever have/ever will meet. He makes every day fun!

We added a fur-baby to our little family last year...

...and somehow managed to keep him alive the past 7 months!

Brooksy was definitely a big change for us. As much as we love him, that thing caused a lot of tense arguments and flared tempers between Mike and I!

Discussions over his food, his behavior, discipline. Also, mowing the lawn isn't fun when someone 'forgets' to pick up after the dog......(did you guess I was the guilty one?) But in the end we're better for it--we tackled a huge responsibility, succeeded and have a wonderful pooch!

There are times during the day when I think of Mike and just smile. Does that sound sappy? Too bad. It's true.

It's just easy being married to Mike. When I met him I knew I was done for. He gets me. I get him. It really can be as simple as that.

On several occasions over the past year we've been at an event or out with friends and someone will stop us to say how happy we look together. Just last night we were leaving happy hour and a man stopped Mike to tell him how funny our conversations with one another looked and how awesome it was to watch us together. And then he fist-bumped him.

It was weird. But sweet.

We plan to go to La Grotta for our anniversary--site of our rehearsal dinner!

If that's not worthy of a fist bump I don't know what is.

Caribbean Cuisine Part Deux

It's been gross here lately. Sleety, snowy, cold and disgusting. So of course I started daydreaming about our honeymoon in St. Lucia and torturing myself thinking about that week in paradise.

And then I started salivating thinking about the food we gorged on.

I needed a taste of the islands. I suggested we have a St. Lucia night and Chef Mikey was all over it.

I provided the soundtrack

And the pinas!

The chef got to work

My goodness it was delicious.

Caribbean chicken, fried plantains, coconut rice---it took me right back!

Now if only the weather would cooperate with my daydreaming...

"I Fondue!"

(Thank Mike for this post's title.)

Anniversaries are pretty awesome. Not only do you get to celebrate one of the best days of your life with the person you love most but you get lots of presents and well-wishes from everyone else.

I have said it 1,000 times before but it's absolutely worth repeating: we have the best friends and family. Earlier this week we started getting lots of cards, which is so sweet because why should anyone else care about our anniversary? Yesterday we received this gorgeous rose bush (I think they're roses?) from Mike's parents:

Definitely need to find a home in our new garden for this!

Yesterday Mike got home from work bright and early and we made breakfast. We had a frittata and fruit salad on our wedding china and orange juice out of our Disneyworld flutes.

Then we exchanged presents. I was so very excited about what I got Mike. I really stuck with the paper theme and sent him on a scavenger hunt to find his presents:

I got him tickets to the Flying Squirrels since we've yet to go to a game and made him this:

The text consists of all of the inside jokes, special moments and significant dates in our relationship, from our first date up until our first anniversary. I had been working on it for a few months and couldn't wait for him to see it. Mike was very touched and we laughed about it for a few minutes, and then he gave me my gifts.

I've already spoken about how good of a gift-giver my husband is but I really thought I had him beat this time. Couldn't be more wrong. For starters he got me a wine cube which he meant as a joke but was still very appreciated. And then I opened this:

The pictures don't do this justice so let me explain. That is our favorite wedding picture, made up entirely of pictures of the two of us throughout the course of our relationship. Those hundreds of little squares are actually little pictures:

I was in shock. So sweet and so thoughtful! It's also funny that we got each other a gift with the same basic concept.

After that we hung around the house and watched 'Despicable Me' and the Capitals playoff game and ate cupcakes from Frostings. We didn't have any saved from our actual reception but luckily the store is only a few minutes from our house!

We also drank our anniversary wine, which was the final bottle gifted to me at my bachelorette party. It was delicious (even at 10:00 in the morning) and was a special edition made up of two types of grapes blended together. How fitting!

For dinner we headed to the Melting Pot.

Thank goodness we can entertain one another because it was a 3 hour meal! Totally delicious though. Didn't suck at all:

It was wonderful just being able to spend the entire day together. Such a great way to celebrate our first year as Mr. and Mrs!

No Longer Newlyweds

A year ago today I made the smartest decision of my life and married Mike.

It has been a year since our wedding…how crazy is that? The other night we were talking about how quickly the time has passed. We agreed that the three months leading up to our wedding were excruciatingly slow and the past twelve have flown by. This moment still feels like it happened just yesterday:

I still smile when someone calls me Mike’s wife. I love buying cards that say ‘To My Husband’ (Mike gets at least two cards for each occasion---I have a hard time picking my favorite!)

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest, which I can sort of understand . You’re settling into your new roles and the expectations that go along with them. Am I responsible for cleaning and Mike for cutting the lawn? Should I be cooking dinner more often? Who buys the G and T’s?

My mom once told me that marriage is comforting because you don’t worry that every little fight is going to be the one that breaks you up. It sounds silly but it makes a lot of sense! You’re committed to one another and instead of just giving up, you talk it out. We definitely communicate a lot better now.

Of course, we still knit-pick--or 'scorch' one another, as is the term in this family. Mike’s dad once asked us what the good and bad parts of being married were. The stupid, little fights are definitely the worst. I think it’s because you’re both so overly sensitive that you end up picking fights. At least I know that’s how I am ;)

But there are so many good parts! Mike takes such good care of me, without even asking. We have finally had time to decide on how to decorate and have made some big strides towards improving our home. And we laugh.

Not a day goes by that we don’t laugh together. I am really, really weird but Mike is too--he laughs at my jokes even when we both know they're terrible. It’s also pretty special when you can communicate with your spouse through a series of hand movements or inside jokes and that's definitely us. Sure, no one else understands what we’re talking about but does that really matter?

So cheers to us. We're gonna celebrate it up big tonight and toast to how awesome we are. Here's to many more anniversaries to come!

Memory maker

I've already talked about how I'm not one to hold onto things I don't use everyday, but I do have a heart. There are some things I can't bear to part with--I still have the stuffed kangaroo that my dad bought me the first day I played basketball in fifth grade, because of my great jump shot no doubt.

When the engagement/wedding process started we received all types of sentimental notes and cards and things that I just couldn't throw away, so I bought a memory box to store them in. Over the months we've tucked other items in there, like our rehearsal dinner menu and the room key to our honeymoon suite from St. Lucia.

But something about the box bothered me. I have a tendency to either want to hide everything or hang it all on our walls; there's no middle ground. It felt wrong to box all those memories up, but I couldn't think of a way to display it tastefully. My friend Katie suggested I get a shadow box frame and use that to show off the little mementos from our wedding.

It took me 15 minutes and $10 and this is what I ended up with:

I'm pretty happy with it! I am the complete opposite of crafty and this was really easy. I took our program, save-the-date, placecard, and some favors and just taped everything to the felt back.

Kind of makes me want to start saving things again. Kind of.

Tattoo Tuesday

(Wouldn’t that be a fun new theme for every Tuesday?)

Some eyebrows were raised at our wedding when a noticeable mark was showing from above the seam of my wedding dress.

Exhibit A:

Yes, that is a tattoo.

In fact, I have several tattoos, none of which you could see on our wedding day.

Except for that one. And it was front and center.

Let’s inspect closer, shall we?

It says ‘River City’ --the nickname for Richmond--and there is a heart at the beginning of it. I got it when I was 21 and thought of it as my way of expressing my independence and living on my own. This is totally embarrassing in retrospect, but back then I thought it was genius.

It’s right on my ribs, which was a mistake for two reasons:

1) I thought I could hide it easily.
2) TATTOOS ON YOUR RIBS HURT.

For some reason I felt the need to hide it from my parents. In my defense, I hid that bad boy for 5 years, although family trips to the beach were complicated. I was pretty proud of myself.

But then Mike had to go and propose and I realized the jig was up: wedding dress shopping was going to be my downfall. Momma C would see the tattoo and freak. I decided it was best to fess up and begged for forgiveness—my mom proved her unending coolness and said “It’s your body; do what you want.” Or at least that’s what I heard…right Mom?

When I found ‘the dress’ we realized it would still show the tattoo and debated the options: cover it with make-up? That was soon dismissed because it wasn’t worth messing up the dress. The final decision was to fit the top within an inch of my life and hope for the best. All in all, I thought I was pretty successful at hiding the tattoo, partially because I couldn’t breathe most of the night so I know that top was pretty tight.

When I see pictures of the tattoo peeking out of the dress I do cringe a little. It’s not that I’m ashamed; I just didn’t want to be considered “trashy-looking” on our wedding day. At least now I have some leverage when our future daughter comes home begging for a tattoo one day!

I finally have all the pictures back from my Trash the Dress session and my oh my; were they worth the wait. A few of my favorites!
